The defect

The airbag system in the affected vehicles could experience electrical shorting due to exposure to high inductive electrical noise in the electrical circuit, resulting in damage to the Airbag Sensor Assembly (ECU). This could cause airbag warning lights to illuminate and the front airbag(s) and/or seat belt pretensioner(s) to become deactivated, and/or cause those airbag(s) to deploy inadvertently.Some vehicles in this recall may also contain a faulty Takata airbag inflator: As it gets older, a combination of heat and humidity can cause the airbag inflator propellant to degrade. If an affected vehicle is involved in a collision triggering the airbag, the metal inflator housing may explode/rupture under too much internal pressure.

The remedy

Parts for the Airbag Sensory Assembly are available, so please make an appointment at your preferred Toyota Dealer.Those vehicles with a Takata inflator:Owners of affected vehicles are advised that the vehicle is under 'critical recall’. It is recommended that you stop driving the vehicle and immediately arrange for airbag replacement as the vehicle has a heightened risk of causing injury or death.
