The defect

There may be an electrical short circuit in the driver's airbag clockspring wiring connector. If the deviation occurs the supplemental restraint system lamp (SRS) will be permanently lit and the message 'AIRBAG SYSTEM SERVICE REQUIRED' will be displayed in the Driver Information Module (DIM).

The hazard

If the short circuit occurs during driving and the driver ignores the warning, in the event of an accident where the deployment of the driver's airbag is required, the airbag may not deploy as intended or not deploy at all.

The remedy

Contact your authorised Volvo dealer to have the driver's airbag clockspring wiring connector upgraded.
